Rockpooling with Gerrans School
Rockpooling with Gerrans School
On 7th July members of the REACT Gerrans Bay Marine Group (Annabel, Binky and Barry) and Wild Roseland Marine Group (Jo and Jane) met with Towan Class (Year’s 1 and 2) of Gerrans (Primary) School for a morning clambering around the rockpools on Tatums Beach, Portscatho.
The 20 children plus their teacher Emily and her two assistants walked down from the school with buckets and boots and were soon split up into three groups (Shells, Fish and Urchins) and assigned a rockpool each. The searched diligently and intelligently and found all sorts of creatures and seaweeds, including anemonae, a guppy, hermit crabs and other crabs, prawns, sea lettuce, serrated and bladder wrack and others.
The children marked the level of the sea when they got there, which corresponded to low tide. Each group then estimated where they thought the tide would reach by the end of the session. It was clear they understood the principle of the tides ebb and flow.
We also had a quiz. Annable and Barry had come up with ten questions. These were put to each group separately and every group answered all the questions correctly.
It was a joy to see the children enjoying the beach. They were impeccably behaved and really impressed us all with their breadth of knowledge.
