Richard Cochrane Environmental Award Scheme for Primary Age Children
Terms and Conditions
- Competition
- The competition is free to enter.
- Open to any child under the age of 12 who lives on the Roseland or attends a school or youth group on the Roseland.
- Entries are welcomed regardless of background, ability, or educational setting, and reasonable adjustments will be made where possible.
- Closes at 5pm on 30th June 2026.
- Purpose
- To inspire young people to understand and act on key environmental themes relevant to the Roseland, while supporting schools to deliver practical sustainability learning.
- Entries
- Entries must make a positive environmental impact.
- Entries can be made by schools, classes, youth groups, or individuals, up to a maximum of 3 entries per individual.
- A responsible adult (teacher, parent, or youth leader) must submit each entry, which must be largely the child’s or children’s own work. By submitting an entry, the responsible adult confirms they have parental/guardian consent for the child’s participation.
- Adults can assist children, but the level of support must be declared on the entry form.
- All entries must be registered using the entry form provided by the school, youth group, or digitally via Richard Cochrane Award - Entry Form
- Submissions & Consent
- Submissions supporting entries must be received by a REACT member no later than 5pm on 30th June 2026. Details of the place / school / collection point for any physical submissions will be made available later.
- Parental/guardian consent is required on the entry form for the child’s participation, display of work, and use of their name.
- REACT may wish to photograph or publicise entries. Separate consent will be requested for any use beyond the public display of submissions.
- Submissions remain the property of the entrants. REACT will take all reasonable care, but cannot accept responsibility for, any loss or damage.
- Responsible adults must ensure that any activity children undertake for this award is safe.
- Judging
- Entries will be judged on their impact in the following areas:
- Changing behaviours - did it help people waste less, recycle more, walk or cycle instead of using a car, for example)
- Understanding the environment - Does the entry show you understand how our actions affect the planet?
- Taking responsibility - Did you take action yourself instead of waiting for someone else to fix it
- Helping others to get involved - Did you encourage friends, family, or your community to join in?
- Solving problems - Did you come up with a good idea to fix an environmental problem in a planet friendly way?
- Creativity – Did you think of a fun or imaginative way to portray the importance of being environmentally friendly?
- To support fair judging, entries must include evidence demonstrating the activity undertaken and its impact. Evidence should clearly show
- What action was taken
- Why the action was chosen
- What changed or improved as a result
- What the child or group learne
- Evidence may include (but is not limited to):
- A short, written reflection (individual or group)
- Photographs (with appropriate consent)
- Before-and-after comparisons
- A teacher, parent, or youth leader note confirming the activity
- Simple measurements (e.g., waste reduced, items reused, number of participants involved)
- Drawings or visual explanations (particularly for younger children)
- Evidence should be proportionate to the age of the child and the scale of the activity REACT reserves the right to request clarification where necessary
- Judging will be carried out by REACT volunteers. Additional judges may be co-opted at REACT’s discretion.
- Judging decisions are final and cannot be appealed.
- Judging will take place soon after 30th June and winners will be notified by email or phone using the details provided on the entry form.
- Entries will be judged on their impact in the following areas:
- Display of Submissions
- REACT hopes to arrange a public display of submissions. Names of participating children may be identified in the display.
- Submissions will be retained until after any display is completed
- Prizes
- Every child that enters will receive a certificate.
- Each school/youth group gets a ‘best’ submission award.
- There will be one overall ‘Best on the Roseland’ award :‘The Richard Cochrane Award’. This award includes a locally grown tree and £25.
- All prizes and recognition will be awarded at the judges’ discretion. Prizes are non-transferable, and no cash alternative will be offered.
- Data Protection
- Personal data will be used solely for administration of the award, judging, and communication with entrants, and will not be shared with third parties or used for marketing purposes. Data will be retained only as long as necessary.
- Participants give their permission for the use of names for display of submissions in accordance with REACT GDPR policy.
- Changes
- REACT reserves the right to amend these terms or withdraw the award if circumstances require.
